Question:

Will my comcast signal become weaker if I use 2 splitters?

The cable has a splitter outside the house to distribute to my bedroom (computer) and living room. The question is can I use another splitter inside my bedroom for another TV? I mean what's gonna happen with the signal. Will be better to get another cable from the outside splitter directly into the bedroom TV? What do U think?

  1. The shortest run after the split will give you the strongest signal.  Split the signal in your room.  Also, some splitters, will have a 'hot' out, where the db loss for one connection is much lower than the other...use that side for your modem connection.

Another thing to do is put a signal amplifier on your line in.  A good one will cost about $40-$50, but they are worth it. Connect it in as close to the outside connection as you can, so that it is amplifying the cleanest signal possible.  I use one for my set-up, and I have 4 TV's and 6 computers running off of it, all over the house, and it works fine.

  2. A two-way hybrid splitter has loss of about 3.5 dBmv per leg. A regular 4-way splitter has 7 dBmv loss thru each leg. Try a two-way splitter inside for the bedrom tv, chances are you'll have plenty of signal for a good picture, somewhere between -5 and +5 at the set, most cable companies want a minimum of zero at the set. And anyway, the difference in picture quality is so small with 3.5 dBmv loss, I doubt you could discern it.

The only benefit to running it off the outside splitter is IF it's gonna give you less loss including the cable loss for the length of the outlet which is about 2 dB/100', AND signal strength IS an issue. As in fuzzy, snowy pictures across the highband.

So, yes, in most cases, it is alright to split a cable that's already been split. Make sure you make good fittings-it makes a big difference in picture quality.

Don't mess with an auxiliary amplifier unless you're certain low signal is a problem: high signal strength can overdrive your tuners and result in as crappy reception as low signal.

    Good Luck!
