Question:

Will my computer go faster if I only have one user account on it?

So, right now I have like 3 people who use my computer in my family. When i start the computer, you know how it goes to the screen that asks you to pick a name.

Well, currently I have my name and "Family" on there. I was wondering, even if we never use the "Family" name (all my siblings just go under my name) does it make the computer slower. Like, for instance, does having two different user names make it so that the computer loses some hard drive space. (enough to cause a significant change in speed).

Because, It seems like if I have this other name "Family" that i never use, I should just get rid of it. Although, I don't know if anything will be erased or if anything bad will happen by doing that. If I should just erase the other name, plz tell me how lol.

I think i know how actually. Control Panel, User Account, "Family", Delete user account.

But, if there is a better way, or something...

  1. User accounts do not make your computer run slow. It's the downloads, cookies, pictures etc. And if you don't have a big enough hard drive to accommodate all you do, then I would suggest a bigger one. Plus, upgrade your mother board, video cards, etc will help in making your computer go faster. It's not the users, it's how much you are downloading, saving, games etc...

  2. If both accounts stay logged in, then yes it will slow the computer down. If the other account is just 'on there' then no, it will not impact performance of the PC at all.

  3. No.  You might consider doing things like disk clean-up and defrag.  Get rid of things that aren't being used anymore.  Your computer runs faster based on how much free RAM it has available and free space in its hard drive.  Clean-up those areas and you should see some improvement.

also check for cleaning out your cookies, adware, temp internet files, etc.

  4. doesn't matter how many people are users. cold computers run faster, try de-fragging it, also try not to open to many pager or have too many programs running. it that doesn't work, upgrade

  5. Unless your PC is really old and is in need of many upgrades the users accounts wont matter, unless as said before someone is logged into the other do many downloads and such, which doesn't sound like your problem.

If your pc is older and you are just trying to keep it running the best you can for a while longer, I would say delete everything on it that isn't used. If you are getting hard drive space errors back up all your pictures. old documents and other things you rarely open but want to keep. Check whats running in your back ground and remove unnecessary programs.

Run a defrag about once a week (it kinda organizes the hard drive) and check for any viruses, spyware and that kind of thing remove anything you find.

While you are 'cleaning up' your pc, also do a physical cleaning. Buy a can or two of air, take off the side of your case (hint, take it outside!) and blow all that c**p out of it. You would be surprised just how much dirt and dust will build up in there. Cool, clean PCs are happy PCs and happy PCs run nice, fast and smooth :) IMHO it never hurts to buy a couple more fans too...but then again I'm nuts like that.

  6. yeah most likely. it'll start up faster that's for sure

  7. Yes! the fewer accounts you have, the less space will be taken up! You computer has to save the settings for all the accounts.

  8. if you are only using one account at once then the others are not slowing it down. If you are using fast user switching and have more then one user logged on at once then it will slow it  down
