Question:

Will my debit card go through if I have a cheque waiting to clear in my account?

I don't have a balance available to withdraw, but I have over £200 waiting to clear in my account.

I know that card payments don't come off for a couple of days, and my cheque will be cleared by the time they come off.

I just don't want to try and use my card, and it get's declined. Does anyone know if it will go through?

  1. Yes this will go tru imediatly when they put it tru the systems. So don't do any transactions while you waiting for a check to clear.Other wise will Bounce your check  and the bank will charge you a fee of 25.00 to 30.00  dollars for over draft to your account and this will mess up your account . Check the policies at your bank where you got the debit card they will give you much better information.

  2. People are right here, unless you have an overdraft zone, you will effectively have no funds to draw on until the cheque is cleared. It will probably get declined although some accounts do allow unauthorised lending.  Why not try and do a ATM withdrawal to see what happens?

  3. If you buy something with your debit card it shows up right away.......

  4. Cheques take up to 5 days to go through clearing. Until that point, the money is not classified as being 'available' in your account.

    1. Your card maybe be declined.

    2. Your card maybe be acccepted, but if the cheque has not cleared, you will most likely face OD charges.

  5. i doubt it but if it does you will end up with a charge if you go over your limit.don't risk it.

  6. No, you have to have cleared funds in your account for you to be able to make a card payment.  If you don't have an overdraft, then the card will be declined.

  7. I used to do this.

Yes, your debit card will pay but if the payments clear and your £200 deposit has not cleared yet, you're going to have to pay your overdraft fees for each time money is taken out.  So, let's say you use your card 5 times and each charge is less than £10.  If your check doesn't clear and 5 charges have been taken from your account, the first of which has made your account negative, your bank will charge you 5 times their overdraft fee.  So let's say your bank overdraft fee is £25.  You'll be paying £25 x £5 = £125 for 5 charges that did not equal £50 combined.

  8. Yes your balance available   will be  calculated  at the time your card  is entered  ,  and accepted or rejected  based on this information   Also takes account of any agreed overdraught. The  fact that a credit is awaiting clearance  will not come into this decision,  so it is possible  your proposed purchase will be declined.   So wait till your cheque has cleared then
