Question:

Will my dog be ok? Ate maggots today!?

He managed to get a rotten bit of something and when I tried to get him to drop it a couple of wiggly maggots fell out of his mouth! It was so disgusting. Seems ok now, I keep checking him for a fever. Should I do anything else? Thanks!

  1. I know it's totally disgusting, but I'd be more worried about the 'bit of something' he was munching on rather than the maggots.  The maggots will just digest & come out when he goes to the bathroom, they are not internal parasites.  I'd just keep an eye on him until tomorrow... he'll probably just get a tummy ache or some diarrhea.  If he gets a fever or if he vomits, give the vet a call.

    Hope this helps!

  3. dog will be ok.my dog ate a snail. she puked him and was sick all day.next day she got better and learned a lesson.

  4. he will be fine. in the wild dogs would eat anything rotten or not. don't worry.x

  5. ya they will pass.

  6. Ew! Don't let him give you kisses for a while. LOL

No-the maggots cannot hurt him. They just lend a little extra protein. You have to be more concerned about food poisoning. But dogs tend to have an awesome stomach for rotten stuff (my puppy once ate half of a dead decaying bird). All wild dogs need to be able to tolerate a certain amount of bacteria and bacteria by-products.

Watch for any vomiting and diarrhea, and if it gets bad and won't stop after a day take him to the vet. We don't want him to get dehydrated.

  10. I actually have two boy scouts in my troop who eat them and they are OK so I bet the dog is OK.

Yea I know it makes me sick every time they do it.

  11. Don't worry - He'll be fine!

Your average Maggot is designed to function in a very specific environment and your Dogs stomach is definately not it.
