Greetings,

I bought a Golden Retriever when he was only a few weeks old. It’s just me and him living in my house so we became very close. He would follow me around no matter what I did, would wait next to the bed while I slept, would go running with me, etc. Just recently I left for a year long deployment (my dog is now 2 years old). To take care of him, I flew my dog to my parent’s house where he will stay while I am deployed. He is going to have much more fun there because my parents live on a lake, have a Golden of their own, and are retired so are home all day.

My fear is that after a year that my dog won’t remember me, or at the very least not have that same bond with me that we had. My other fear is that when I go to pick up my dog after my deployment it will be traumatic for him because he has become great friends with my parents Golden, plus with their bigger lawn, the lake, and the attention he gets by somebody being home all day whereas I have to leave him alone for 9-10 hours a day while I am at work.

So my questions are A. Will my dog remember me after a year. B. Will we have the same bond. And C. Will it be traumatic for him to pull him away from his new environment.

Thanks

  1. My dogs remembered me when I came home, and we had the same bond we always did.  He might miss your parents house, but it won't take long for him to get back in your old routines.

  2. it would be cruel to uproot him when you come back from your travels. I will be traumatic for your dog and you may want to go away again.

Dogs need companionship and attention. Your dog will have become attached to your parents and their dog and he will be having fun. Yes, he will remember you however leaving him alone for 9-10 hours is not fair. Leave him with your parents permanently.

  3. Yes, he will remember you & have the same bond!!!  Don't worry--you have been through enough!!!  He will be so glad to see you!!!  It will be alright!!!

Welcome back to U.S.A. & thanks for what you did for our country!!!

  4. I know people who have been separated form their dog for years.  the dog will never forget you.  especially after the bond u guys have together.  don't worry.  your parent's house sounds like a great place for your dog.

Awww.  I just watch a video on Christian the Lion.  So cute!

  5. go search  Christian the Lion on utube and watch it it is so cool.  I think that he will remember you.  From 'Sandy Australia.

  6. your dog will never forget you.

when i got my dog, she was three and her last owner went to prison, when he was released he came over to say hello and my dog was all over him like he had never left and he was away for about 2 years, i kept the dog only because i didnt want to let her go and because he coud accomidate her.

So no you dog would not have forgetten you and yeah you should take your dog home with you, but if possible take your dog back to your parents every now and then so it can play with their dog and visit your parents and do the dog thing lol
