i am finishing my basement using 2x4 studs 16" apart.I have to lower the ceiling a bit because of some pipes so now i dont have the ability to use the horizontal 2x4 at the top of the wall as support for the drywall nor can i s***w into it ( only into the vertical ones) since this will be right in the corner where my wall and ceiling meet will there be a chance of movement causing it to crack or should i put another horizontal brace between each stud at the top to s***w into

  1. Drill a smaller hole first where the studs will be driven in. This will prevent your dry wall from cracking......

  2. It will be fine nailed on every vertical stud.

  3. Your wall will be fine, especially since you are using screws.

The only place you could ever have a problem would be the seam between the ceiling and the wall in any event. If the ceiling is screwed in as tight as the wall, proper "mudding" of the joint should take care of any concerns, even if you have a dance floor for elephants above! I've learned a few tricks over the years, and I'd like to tell you, I like working with the self -adhesive fiber mesh tape; (it can't "bubble up" like paper tape, so it's worth the extra buck in time and hassle saved). If you want to get it done fast, you might want to try the new lightweight, fast setting. easy sanding joint compound, 20 or 45 minutes to set! Smooth with a wet sanding sponge, and minimal dust! You can overlap with a 3rd and final coat of "regular" mud, if needed for a "basement" job, but let it dry all the way over night,  paint it with a prime coat of a good flat latex or PVA, and if the finish coat is flat too, even if an elephant dances too enthusiastically, and puts a hole right through the ceiling, just touch it up with the leftover fiber-mesh tape and "hot mud" you saved, the touch up paint, and you'll never know there was a crack there, let alone an elephant sized hole. Save your worry for more important things, like catching the shutoff valve if those pipes ever leak..... you'll know how to patch the hole if you ever have to get back up in there!
