Question:

Will my eyesight ever get better?

i'm 13 1/2 and have been wearing glasses for nearly a year. i use to go on the computer for hours and tended to read books despite how much light there was. when i went to get glasses(i'm nearsighted left- 1.25 right- 0.25), i stopped going on the computer so much and took much more care in looking after my eyes. i think my eyes have gotten worse because i cant see the board at the back of the room even with my glasses now. i have some friends who wore glasses for about 2 years and dont need them anymore...is it possible for that to happen to me or will my eyes get continually worse? what are some tips on how i can look after my eyes more?

thanks

  1. Your eyes won't get better.  Using the computer and reading in bad light will not hurt your eyes, it just makes them tired.  Your nearsightedness is built into your eyes, it has to do with the shape of them.

Your eyes don't get better, but they change as you grow (you are still growing!)  They will stabilize when you get to be 18 or so, and then change more slowly, until you get into your 40s, and then they start changing again.  You should have your eyes looked at every year and you might need a new prescription already.

  2. It will most likely get worse, though it could stop and stay where it is . I don't suggest not wearing your glasses because that will make it worse.

    And eat carrots. :]

  3. Myopia is hereditary (in your DNA) and no, myopic eyes don't "get better". You are only slightly nearsighted. It may get worse as you grow up, but will stabilize in your twenties. This is normal. Nobody can predict exactly how myopia will progress in each person, but if you poll family members you can estimate it.
