So someone suggested the water tempature might not be right so I touched it and it was pretty cold and the tempature was set to 76 so then I decided to max it out to 88 will he cook? I have a smal heater on the right side of the tank floating i dont really have those sticky things so yea. ty

  1. no not at all

thats what its at for my mollies

    and there fine

the one really hot day it got to 90

  2. no he wont cook, just keep an eye on him and also try getting a book on that type of fish I'm sure it will tell you

  3. you really shouldn't go over 82 (which is what even the warmest of fish like it at).

  4. While jacking the temperature up to the high 80's and low 90's is an effective way to ward off many parasites and infections, I would not recommend keeping him at that temperature on a permanent basis. When the temperatures get higher fish become more active, which produces more waste. This problem is made worse by the fact that warmer water has a lower dissolved oxygen content than colder water. This could quickly lead to water quality issues.

I personally do not keep my tropicals at that temperature unless they are sick or unless I am trying to breed them (this only works for certain species mind you). I would recommend slowly decreasing the temperature back down to 76. Also, you don't have much wiggle room in the event of a heat-wave or heater malfunction, most fish will be OK at 88 degrees...most fish will be dead at 93 degrees...

Do you have a thermometer? Using your hand is not an accurate way to get how "cold" or "hot" something is. I keep both coldwater fishes and tropical fish--the tropical fish's water feels MUCH MUCH warmer than it actually is if I have been cleaning out the coldwater tank.

  5. 80 is the best temp for most fish.  My friend lost all her fish because her heater whet crazy and yes her fish all died.  The temp got up well into the 90s.  It was awful she had those fish for so many years.

    88 is pushing it.
