Question:

Will my gerbil....?

I was wondering how long it would take for her to warm up to our family and let us hold her and stuff?

Yesterday she got in her exercise ball 2 times very quickly, she just crawled right in.

The thing is, we just took her in from a family that had her but didn't have the time to really care for her, and she was in the sons room so she didn't have a good look at the busy household.

She seems to be having a good time here...but I'm wondering how long it would be til she can really trust us?

  1. well bout two weeks to  month

  2. i personally have found that the way to a gerbils heart is through food.  when i first got mine they were friendly but not too trusting, so i gave them sunflower seeds as treats and now they get excited when people walk by their tank.  also get her as familiar as you possibly can with your scent, the trust will build as she learns to recognize you.

  3. talk softly to your gerbil.  let your buddy get used to your voice.  sometimes if you keep your hand in there for a little bit each day they can warm up to you that way as well.  i hold a piece of their food in my hand and i let them take it and they are always happy to get food!

  4. when you stop with the string and pvc pipe.  i don't think this is the way to warm up to a gerbil.  if you have any real gerbil questions check out joecartoon.com  and watch the gerbil bar.

glad i could elp you with this problem it gives me a warm fuzzy and no it is not a gerbil

  5. I am no gerbil expert but this is what i think:

take some time to let her get to know you, pet her, play with her, enjoy time with her. Then  after a while maybe a couple weeks to a month, she should be thinking "This is where I like it, This is where they play with me and love me... This is home."

If you really want to  know and have time you could do a test after 2 months or so. Dont do it right away or she think youre leaving her. Anyway, just put her in a real life situation where she needs to trust you to pass. Just keep a close eye on her while doing the test so she doesnt get into any trouble or harm.
