Question:

Will my guinea pig baby be okay?

My two and a half week old guinea pig baby has gone missing. We don't know if the dad ate him or if he escaped. Will the mum and other siblings act weird? And will the baby be okay by himself? Thank you!

  1. The mum may act like she has lost something but considering how many babies she has had none of the others may have noticed.

  2. No he is too young to live by himself without his mother's milk and there and too many predators out there for him. You are supposed to take the boar out of the cage after the mother gives  birth to her babies. Otherwise he might kill it or something. I haven't heard of guinea pigs actually eating their young as they are herbivores though.

And to animals r awesome, are you trying to be sarcastic or what?

  3. He definitely was not eaten by the father.  That is not a normal guinea pig behaviour, they are not like many other rodents in this regard.  It is far more likely that the baby escaped.

Take a very close look around the house.  If you have other animals like cats or dogs then contain them in a room that you have already searched.  Check under and behind things, he needs to eat to survive.  While he is almost weaned he does need to constantly eat hay and other foods.

You need to remove the male immediately if he is with the female.  Female guinea pigs can become pregnant again pretty much immediately after giving birth.  It is extremely hard on a female to be bred over and over.  You need to remove the male and hope that she is not pregnant.

At three weeks (21 days) you need to remove the male guinea pigs from the females.  You can place the boys in with dad.  You can never let the males and females visit unless they have been spayed or neutered.  It takes literally seconds for guinea pigs to breed.

Great info on determining if you have boys or girls:

  4. Umm, i suppose either his dad or mom has ate their baby. A baby guinea will not go far away as hi or she can't survive on their own. the reason why their parents eat or kill one of their babies is because they want to get rid of the weaklings or a sick one

  5. No it isn't okay. Guinea pigs that young are not able to escape. Unless by accident. The dad or mom did eat it. No he will not be okay by himself. He is a baby! You sound realllly smart.
