Question:

Will my hamster's hair grow back?

I own a Syrian Hamster, who is now just about a year old. I use Carefresh bedding and the regular hamster seed-mix for food. In the last week, he has started to lose his hair in large patches. His entire head is almost bald, and the hair between his shoulders looks very thin right now too. He doesnt not seem to mind, it is not red or itchy looking. It's just, wrinkly skin.

Will his hair grow back? Is there anything I can do to help guide this process? I don't want my Hammy to get sick, he is my pride and joy! I am very scared for him, and could use all the advice I can get.

  1. VET.

    Good Luck!

  2. It almost sounds like ring worm. Lol. I may be wrong but that seems like the most reasonable cause for the hair loss in patches as you say. It depends though, are the patches circular and does it appear to be spreading?

If it is infact ring worm, it will cover his body and his system will build up an immunity to it. You should be a bit watchful of you getting it yourself.

If it's not the fungus though, I see you doing nothing else wrong so, unless it's internal or it's he himself doing the damage, I would almost opt to take him into the vet.

    Good luck.

  3. The EXACT SAME THING happened to me. I'm glad I'm not the only one. What I did, is I phoned up the vet, and explained it to her. DO NOT VISIT THE VET TO TELL HER THE PROBLEM. ONLY VISIT HER FOR MEDICATION AS IT COSTS A LOT! anyways...... lol i phoned up the vet, told her the problem, and she said it was maybe mites. My mom went to the vet, but she didn't bring the hamster. It would be too much stress on the hamster. So my mom went to the vet, and the vet gave her special medicine that helped with EVERYTHING! (ringworm, mites, and any other disease inside and outside the body.) The medicine was only $12, but I think they were closing down or something, cause that's really cheap. Maybe that was the real price... anyways, I suggest you do the same as I did. But before that, I forgot to mention that it keeps getting worse. My hamster was almost all bald, and wrinkly, and her skin looks all scabby too. I went to the pet store, and I bought liquid Vitamin drops to put in her water, which helped, and I also bought this spray can thing for mites, and I took her whole cage apart, and sprayed everything with the mites stuff, but don't spray the hamster, and make sure the cage is all empty when you do it too. Anyways... THEN I called the vet.....  Good Luck!
