I am also scared that if i hold him he will run away and not like me. I don't know what i should do, please help

  1. when i first got my hampster i would warm up to it over a few days like...... watch her run on the wheel and hand feed her sliced almonds and peanuts. u might be rushing the warm up fase.. how long have u had the hampster?? everyday u probably should be getting ur hampster out of its cage and let it run around like ur couch or something...... i hope this helps

  2. Keep on doing what your doing.

    Goo luck!

  3. Your hamster does not DISLIKE you..he's terrified of you.  Imagine you were in his position.  Hamsters were prey animals in the wild, this has been left over in them after YEARS of breeding.   You are much bigger than he is, so for now he sees you as something trying to eat him, he's not aware that you are trying to be friends, just yet.  If you haven't already, give him a few days to adjust to his new environment before you start the taming process.  This takes patience.

I know how tempting it is to start holding the hamster just as soon as you get him home from the pet store, but for the first few days, he needs to adjust and learn his new cage.  The move from the petstore stressed him out some.  This is normal.

I would suggest offering him treats and/or seeds in the palm of your hand, after he takes the treats leave your hand in the cage for a few minutes.  Take your hand out, and try again the next evening.  You cannot do this during the day as he's TRYING to sleep and this will not work.

The next night, move the treat up so he has to touch you to get it.  Then leave your hand in the cage again for a few minutes.  Do this until he's secure with your hand being near him.  When he steps up and eats the treat out of your hand, cup your other hand around him and SLOWLY draw your hand out of his cage.  Hold him close to your chest and softly pet him and talk to him.

Hamsters do not run away because they do not like being with their human.  They escape their cages because they are little escape artists, and that's what they do.

It kind of sounds like you are scared of being bitten.  Don't be afraid of him.  Hamsters only bite when they are scared and need to protect themselves.  When you approach his cage and he's asleep, lightly tap the cage so he can wake up BEFORE you stick your hand in that cage to pick him up or you WILL be bitten..it's not that he doesn't like you, YOU scared him.

It took me 6 weeks to tame one hamster, but she was well worth it..she came when I called her name and if she ever escaped her cage (which she was known to do frequently), she ALWAYS came back to her cage with a mouthful of dry dog food.  I could allow her to run loose under my watchful eye, and I would do my chores with her in my shirt pocket.

It takes time to tame a hamster, but after you do, you will be rewarded with lots of snuggle time, and an affection that will touch you FOREVER!

  4. Maybe because your hamster gotten used to his caged like its a protector place to keep him safe. And hes probably scared of goin out its cage because from his point of view he thinks that the cage will keep him safe.

  5. What you are doing is good, but I wouldn't rush into the holding him part just yet. I would wait untill your hamster willingly comes to you when the cage door is opened or when you are feeding him a treat. Then once he regulary comes to you with no problems then start to pet him softly. Once he is fine and used to the petting and feeding then I would try and hold him/pick him up. This way he knows he can trust you and won't be so nervous. If you rush it, and he doesn't trust you enough it will only make things worse because next time you visit him he will not be as eager to see you. Just be patient and in the end you will be glad you did because you formed a great bond with your hamster. Also just visiting your hamster and talking to him is a good way for him to get used to you. Good luck and have fun with your hammy!

  6. Yep...just keep at it :)

at least that's what I think

  7. i agree with the first persn

  8. maybe hold him/her a little more each day, so she will get more used to you, otherwayz if u never hold her she won't be use to being held.
