Question:

Will my insurance be affected if I was in an accident out of state, using someone else's car?

I live in FL but go to school in SC. I was driving my boyfriend's car in SC and was in an accident. I think it was an at-fault accident but I'm not sure, because I hydro-planed and spun out into a semi-truck, which did not stop. I was ticketed for $81 for driving "too fast for conditions" (it was raining, the officer explained that this did not mean i was speeding, it just meant i lost control of the car, etc). Either way, will this affect my insurance?

Thank you!

  1. The best person to ask would be your insurance agent. Although usually when your involved in an accident it does affect your insurance.

  2. In short, yes and no. This will not affect your insurance as far as you getting slapped by your carrier because you were not the vehicle OWNER. However, if you pay the ticket or are convicted, the states all have a way to record convictions for you even though you do not have a SC license. Also, there is this thing called the "Non-resident Violator Compact" to which all states subscribe. That means that SC will notify the FL DMV of any conviction. Your insurance company, by the way, like all of them, have access to all 50 state DMV's to see your record(s.) Insurers do assess surcharges on you for moving violation convictions including this case where you did not own the car in the accident.

  3. If the insurance does an update on your records, yes it will.
