  1. No, sorry, but a router will not speed up your connection.  Your bandwidth is determined by your ISP.  A router will help with security chores -- most SOHO routers include both a NAT firewall and Stateful Inspection firewall -- but it doesn't improve bandwidth.  In fact, depending upon the bandwidth that you have and the router that you're using, it could slow down your connection if the router does not have enough throughput.

Connecting both NICs in a client to 2 switchports won't affect connection speed at all.  In fact, if the switch component of the router (every router with more than one LAN port has an integrated switch) doesn't support Spanning Tree, it's possible to create a broadcast storm an choke your network off completely.  Don't do it!

  2. thats not how it works you have only so much bandwidth that your isp provides and thats all you got if anything the router slows it down a bit

  3. First there is a number of factors that can effect your internet connection speed like how far away you are from the exchange (isp providers servers) or the telephone lines if your not using cable.

If your using ADSL the first thing you can try is to check the maximum speed you can possible get from your landline this is easy as you can use the BT's ADSL broadband checker by entering your telephone number then finding an appropriate isp.

Next make sure you have a good quality cat5 cable (the shorter the distance to your computer and the router the faster the data gets sent) and make sure the router has up to date firmware.  Turn the router off and on after an hour will force it to resynchronise with your isp and improve performance if its been lagging.

Disconnect all the phones and connect your router to the master phone socket if you notice a dramatic improvement it might be your cabling if that dont work connect each phone back one at a time to locate the problem.  If that fails unscrew the faceplate from your main socket to access BT's test socket and test again if this fails call up BT and ask for a new socket.

If this still doesnt work perform a line test using BT's engineers 'quiet test' by dialing 17070and choosing option 2 if you hear a noise like crackling visit www.bt.com and initiate the automated line noise test and will confirm if a problems found.

Thats if your using ADSL if your using virgin media the internet speed is dependant on how many other people are using the line.  If your playing online games upgrading your processor and memory should do the trick as well.

If this doesnt give me a 5 star an angel will lose its wings
