Question:

Will my lovebird get better?

My lovebird Minty flew into the door and had to get him to the vet as he bashed his eye and just lay in his cage for the whole day. It is 24 hours later and he is eating, drinking, perching, talking and going to the loo. Still very wobbly and lopsided - can fly but unbalanced when he walks and still not himself.

Has this happened to anyone else and did your bird eventually after a few days get better?

I have separated Minty from his partner so that he has his own cage and at the moment he is in another room to keep him quiet and rested but will tomorrow bring his cage next to his mate for a few hours as they do miss each other.

Does anyone have any suggestions as a similar thing has happened to their lovebird?

  1. It sounds like he had a concussion.  Here's some info on bird concussions: http://www.birds-online.de/gesundheit/ge...

If he's eating, that's a really good sign.  I think he's going to recover.  You might try putting them back in the cage together and see how they do.  He may recover faster with his mate there.  My birds have been together since they hatched and they get really upset if they're even in different rooms from each other...if I take one somewhere, I have to take the other one too.

Oh, and you should get some static clings for your door, so that the bird can tell there's something there and doesn't fly into the glass again.

  5. Trim their wings so this does not happen again.

Your bird may have bruised his brain  and it may take weeks for him to get better.  Be loving and patient.

Do not let this happen again.  You did the right thing to remove him from his companion although they should be side by side very soon.

You are a good bird mom.  This was a sad mistake.

  6. your bird is old and it is time to put it down.

  7. You need to take your bird  back to the vet asap.  It is very possible he has a head injury or internal injuries that could result in death Did the vet do any x rays?.  You should keep birds wings clipped at all times so they don't have accidents like this

  8. Time will tell but I think your bird will be fine. Eating, drinking, perching, talking and going to the loo is natural for a healthy functioning bird. If the bird has not broken his neck then he'll probably recover.

  9. well if he is eating he should be better in a week or so
