Will my night mouth guard help?

For the past couple years the dentist has pointed out to me that my tongue gets stuck in between my teeth and then I chew on my tongue. They say it could be from stress or I do it at night without noticing I'm even doing it. My tongue has white patches on the sides. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so what did you do to fix it?
