My family is going on a 8 day trip to a resort in playa del carmen. I have Cingular and I dont think I have the international plan with my other plan. So would it still work in some parts of the area? Or what? and would my phone work on the plane?

and if i do need to call the cingular store and ask, what number would i call?

  1. Your cell phone should work and receive service but you should check with your provider to make sure that you have the international or Mexican service available.

    Call 1-800-331-0500 for customer service.

Also you are asked to turn your cell phone off on planes.

  2. just call cingular tell them you will be in mexico and they will switch it to interntaional..  it will work but it will  be pricey per minute.. if you dont have it switched it wont work at all.. only local calls

  3. My Verizon plan did NOT work in Playa and I have the international plan. I ended up buying a Mextel card and calling from the pay phone outside the resort... as did most other people.

I don't know why some plans work and others don't ... you'd think with the international plan it would work. Didn't work in Paris either... worked well in Aruba.

  4. Your Cingular phone may or may not work in Mexico whether or not you have the international plan turned on (as you can see from other responses, you have about a 50-50 chance for it to work), but if it does work without the plan, you will be paying at least $1 per minute for calls you make, calls you answer, and all messages left on your voicemail once you've made or answered a call in Mexico (most people don't know about this last part). If you have the international plan and your phone works in Mexico, there's a $6 per month charge for the plan until you remember to turn it off,but your minutes cost 60 cents instead of $1 each.

Can I share a great bit of advice. There are phones that are 100% sure to work in Mexico that you can have sent to your home in the USA before you leave for Mexico (so you can make calls to anyone, anywhere [like your transfer driver, say] the moment you land) and calls to the US cost $1 PER CALL, not per minute. (And incoming calls - people that call you - are FREE) The company is called Mexitel Cellular and they are at (mexitel.net) on the Web. These are also really, really good if you want to do different things while you are in Mexico but still stay in touch with each other because calls from one Mexitel phone to any other Mexitel phone in the whole country of Mexico only costs 50 cents (per call, again). Since you are going to Playa Del Carmen, be sure to get a Playa Del Carmen phone (they have different phones for different areas in Mexico) to get these super-low rates.

Hope that helps - have a super time in Playa!

  5. Last summer, I went to Playa and I was able to use my phone.  I made calls back home and did not have any problems.  It cost me a lot more, but it did work.  I also have Cingular and I do not have international calling on my plan.

  6. Yes, I was there in April (from Autralia) and had my phone set to Internation roam. Our phone worked fine.

  7. Dont count on  it working. Mine made local calls - outbound ,but would not recieve any calls. Could not make any international ( back to the states ).

Your asked to turn it off so the signal does not possibly mess up the planes electronics. Better safe than sorry. It does occasionally transmit even when just sitting there - it has to talk to the cell site and update information.

Do voice over IP for your phone needs. Far cheaper and most all internet places are set up for it.

  8. Yes, just like everyone else said, but they will widen your highney hole with the prices
