I got a puppy not to long ago. But unfortunately I have to go to school soon. I will be gone from like 7:05 to about 2:45. My puppy will have to stay in a crate. But he is only 8 weeks old. Isn't that old of a puppy not supposed to be in a crate that long? If not, what should I do? If I keep him in a crate will he be all right or do you know a cheap pet sitter in Howell Michigan? Please help me!

  1. Uhm yeah thats kind of bad. Since it's a puppy, it wants to run around and stuff. You can try to ask your neighbors? To watch the dog. or if you have frences, you can just let it go in your backyard..But have some food and water.

  2. Here's a pet sitting / daycare in Howell

    http://www.club-canine.net/day-care.htm

  3. Well, it's a good idea to give it a really long walk before you leave. It's best to just put it in a room and if there is furniture or something you don't want it to pee on just move it. If it's house trained it should be fine in a room. If it's not there are pads that have a scent on them to attract them to idk pee on it. And then when you get back, give it another long walk.

  4. How about locking the dog in your kitchen? This way he can run around a bit and you can leave food, water, puppy pads, bones and toys out for him.  And a kitchen floor should be easy to clean up. How old was the puppy when you got him? You should never adopt a puppy younger than 8 weeks. Why get a puppy when you can't take care of it?

  5. they can't stay in a crate that long til their like a year old- they will mess alot and it's really hard to train them when you keep them in a crate for that long- plus, its cruel.

  6. Your puppy will be fine my dog had to do the same it trains them to hold them self for the toilet whilst you are out. He will learn to control him self and to eat before you go. As long as you let him do his thing before and after school he will be fine and make sure he has a drink and something to eat before he goes in. He might make a few accidents at the start because all puppys do but don't get angry with him :D he's still learning. He will be a good lil pup! Well trained!

Good luck and don't worry you have made a good choice!

    xx

  7. I do not suggest leaving your puppy for that long alone, but if you can get a friend to come in and let him out of his crate ,and maybe walk him to do his business for like 10 minutes and play with him maybe twice in the time you are gone he should be all right. And as long as you give him a nice long walk after you get home, he wont go crazy and tear up all of your furniture. Some dogs let out their pent-up energy by chewing on everything if they can't get a good walk.

Good luck with your new puppy.

  8. Does it destroy things? Do you have a big bathroom to put it in? I personally would just let it run in the house when it's potty trained but keeping it in a crate isn't that bad. Just make sure you walk it and give it lots of attention. I personally have four dogs and only RARE occasions leave them alone for that long. Honestly I think it's better than taking it to a shelter and it getting put to sleep but that's just me. As you mentioned you may get a cheap dog walker. Dog walkers make a descent amount of money and you can let them know your situation.

  9. I think it will be fine to leave your puppy.Just walk him before you leave him and lots of love when you get home. He will be fine.you could put a stuffed toy in with him.

  10. 8 weeks old is way too young to be left alone for that long.  Can you maybe find a family friend to watch him while you are at school or maybe stop by every once in a while to check on him and take him out?

  11. The puppy should be alright.

Just make sure it has.. toys..

    water...

    food...

and maybe something that plays music...

my grandmas dog used to love that.

and if the crate is big enough.... put a small puppy pad in there. it should get used to those... and when it does.. you dont have to keep it in a crate anymore.. unless it is extremely wild.

i helped you.. now you help me!!

    please and thank you.

  12. The puppy will be ok in the crate as long as he has entertainment so he doesn't get bored. get another puppy to entertain him or buy a mini jukebox so he can listen to some hits whilst you are at school.

  13. can ur parents take care of it every hour or so

  14. The puppy will be fine.  leave food, water, toy.  maybe a mess when you get home.  get the hanging bowls to attach to the crate so he doesn't spill.

  15. The crate will be fine, just dont expect the pup to hold it that long, when you get home let the right outside to go to the bathroom and if you can put a water dish in the crate

  16. A lot of people have to do this. Just make sure he has a couple of toys to play with and some water he can't tip over. When you get home, take him outside and let him go to the bathroom. He should be just fine.

  17. I have a cat and I just let him roam the house all day until i get home..why keep him in a crate?

  18. a new puppy that is eight weeks old is able to stay in a crate until you get home then just let him go out side for a little bit to get some fresh air. just remember to put some food and water in the crate so he dosent get sick!

  19. Never leave your puppy in a crate for 7 hours at home with no food or water. Cuz then there will be a prob. Call Petsmart

  20. no an 8 week puppy can not stay by himself that long. and if you are crate training him this is the wrong way to go about it because he will get use to peeing in the crate. see if someone can some walk him a couple of times as an 8 week puppy will not be able to hold his bladder yet. didn't you think of this before you got the dog. what did you think a puppy would do all by itself while your at school.

  21. If you don't have a trusted neighbor or friend who can let him out at least once during that time, you can look here:

    http://www.petsitters.org/

Type in your zip code on the left, it will bring up pet sitters & dog walkers in your area.   8 hours is much too long for an 8 week old puppy to be in a crate without a break.  Good luck.

  22. Yeah your puppy should be fine. I don't think 8 weeks old is too old to be in a crate at all! Actually- some people keep their small dogs in crates all the time. I would keep your dog in a crate though until he/she is properly trained and knows not to tear the house apart and wait to go to the bathroom until it's outside! haha good luck with your new dog! Also, keep some food, water and a bone in their for your dog so he doesnt get bored or hungry. But your dog will probably sleep most of the time in the crate.

  23. Ideally you should try to arrange for someone to take the puppy out during the time that you are gone.

Whether or not you can make that happen, make sure that the space in which the dog is confined while unattended, be it a crate or a room, has adequate space for a sleeping area and an elimination area.  And, as mentioned by others, access to water when he is left alone for that long is a must.

Once your dog is old enough to go for that length of time without a potty break (4+ months, depending on the breed), and if you are still crate training at that time, be sure to make the crate only as large as it need be for the dog to enter it, turn around freely, and sleep comfortably.  Any larger, where he can still have an elimination area and a sleeping area, will not allow him to be effectively crate trained.

Also, if you have had the dog for even a little time and he is only 8 weeks old now, be sure to get him to a vet to make sure he is healthy.  As it is hardly ever in the best interests of a puppy to be separated from its mother before 8 weeks of age, you cannot assume that your pup came from a source that was concerned about his health.

  24. its cruel to have a puppy in a crate

for any amount of time .

puppies are energetic and need to be played with and given

    attention.

if you arnt going to be there you shouldnt have one

  25. I don't know about Howell Michigan but you should look into a pet sitter you're puppy can't wait that long to go to the bathroom and you will end up with a dog who is under socialized and may become aggresive/fearful. Just look in the paper for a dog walker you're pup will be socialized and to tired to get into trouble! Why not install a doggy door? Then your puppy can go in and out as he pleases just make sure he can not squeeze under the fence while you're gone. Or ...have a run so he is confined to an area but make sure he has room to run around oh and make sure he has shelter and can get in out of the rain and of course his dishes!!
