Question:

Will my rabbits have heart attacks because of stray cats?

We are building a huge hutch outside in our back yard for all our bunnies to go in (4 at the moment.) But what I'm worried about is all the stray cats that come around our house at night. There are so many!

Now, there will be no possible way for anything to get into the cage, but if they try to get in will the rabbits get scared enough to have a heart attack? Because the cats will TRY to get in there because rabbits are one of the things they eat.

Please answer this, especially people who have their rabbits outside where there are cats! Thanks!

  1. cat the stray cats and take them to the shelter as strays.. these kitties need to be reunited with their ownes...

    not sure of the rabbits having heart attack.. never heard of it

  2. Yes, they can have heart attacks at the sight of a predator and the sounds of scary noises at night. They do not know if they are safe or not. Being enclosed and in the dark is scary.

    And predators can be smart and strong when they want to be. They can knock over hutches, open the doors or tear at the wire.

    You shouldn't be housing your rabbits outdoors.

  3. Well, theres good news and bad news. The bad news is, yes it's possible they could have a heart attack, the good news is, no it's not likely they will.

    My bunny has to dea with our cat, our dogs, my brother, everything.

    Just as long as the cats have absolutely no possible way of injuring the bunnies{Such as clawing through cage}

    They should be fine, also be sure they have a cubbby i nthere, to get away fro mthe kitties.

  4. if you are building a hutch for them why not put a layer of metal fencing about 2 or 3 feet away from the hutch so that the cats cant even go near them?

  5. well rabbits get scared really easy and can even DIE of frighten

  6. I hope your rabbits are big then. Larger sized rabbits tend to be less scared of animals (especially if they're bigger themselves), but however, I highly doubt your rabbits will die of fright because they're all safe inside their hutch, and also, there are 4, right? Rabbits are a lot more secure when they're huddling with their other bunny buddies:)

  7. as long as there is protection from the predators, the rabbits will be fine.  you can use chicken wire to cover the habitat or just have lotsa places to hide.  i use a litter box with cover, small dog houses, and other confined areas.  most cats are afraid of adult rabbits as their strong back legs are pretty fierce.
