  1. No they won't forget. My son is 6 years old and he has been going to the pool every summer since he was 10 months old. They don't have swim lessons where I live otherwise he would have gotten some. But I taught him and he swims very very well.

If he has a fear about swimming I still would get him those lessons to help ease his fears

    good luck

  2. Well, copping out on the classes....I know big cash.  But maybe if you could take him to the rec. centre every once in awhile and you join him he could refresh what he has learned and practice it.  It is after all building those muscles thru repetition of use.

  3. no not at all its somthing that you have for every you can only get better from it

  4. No.  Its like riding a bike, you never really forget.  When summer rolls around, it may take him some time to get use to it again, but he won't forget what he's already learned.  That being said, since he doesn't have it down pat yet, go ahead and let him keep going to the lessons if there's no real reason to stop.

  5. If you don't practice anything for a while it is hard to get back into it. So, yeah... He could forget how to swim as well. But he could get better after maybe a week or so.

  6. No silly, he won't forget he's already learned it!

  7. He won't forget, like the others said, but might take longer to get back into it next time.

Really though, if he enjoys it a lot, it is worth the money spent. Swimming is such great exercise and little risk of injury (unlike football and so on). It is something that will keep him fit and may turn into a hobby for him or extended hobby (diving, water polo, surfing). So I am saying, its never a waste of money if he enjoys it. Obviously if money is tight you have to do what you have to do. But if so, try to get him to a place where he can safely swim without lessons, and then it's just an investment of time for you to take him to the pool or beach/lake if you have one closeby and he can stay fit and have fun on his own.

  8. I don't think he would. As long as you let him swim sometimes? Like don't never let him swim again. you should take him to a pool once and a while, like 1 time every 2 months. Hope I helped!

  9. It's like riding a bike. You never forget once you learn.

  10. Stop the lessons!!! If he has had 20 hours and is still just "kinda swimming" you need a different teacher or he is just not ready. I taught swimming lesson for years and I would say the average time it took me to get an 8 year old to be able to jump in and swim the width of the pool was 6-8 hours. Now that's not to say that some don't take longer, but 20 hours of lessons is a lot.

Next summer he will be a year older and probably more than ready. Find a different teacher and he will do great. If you have the chance for him to swim with supervision prior to next summer take him so he will have a chance to lose the fear of the water. Just make it fun...lots of toys and games in the pool!

  11. There's no way he's going to forget how to swim. He might be rusty when he gets back in the water, but nothing one good lesson wont take care of. Swimming is like languages. Once you've got a good basic grip, its' hard to forget.

  12. won't forget unless he's got alzheimers

  13. The chances of him "forgetting" how to swim at 8 years old is kind of hard. I guess you could relate this to riding a bike. Would you "forget" how to ride a bike, if you didn't ride one in 4 years? The answer to the question should be no, but you probably wouldn't be very good at it as well as have a slight fear of getting back on.

  14. You should let him continue to go so he can practice & get really good. 8 years old is kind of old to start swimming, in my opinion. I plan on having my baby start swim soon after brith (definetely within a year)

I had my first swim lesson as a baby and LOVE the water, am a great swimmer, I'm sure that's becuase I was taught how to swim at such a young age.
