Question:

Will my spirulina side effects go away or do I have to miss out on this supplement?

I have been taking spirulina for two days and am having the side effects mentioned on website of headaches, flushing/hot feeling and trouble concentrating. Actually, I am having a hard time trying not to type mistakes here.

Will these symptoms subside if I keep taking it or is this an allergy. I just bought a 1kg container and don't want to have wasted my money.

Has anyone here been though this with spirulina?

  1. I thought supplements were meant to make you feel better. You have to ask yourself if it is more important to feel healthy or waste some money. Next time you are going to try something new, buy a smaller container to see if it suits you first.

Personally, I think you should stop taking it, if your symptoms go away then you know what caused them.

  2. I had the same feeling. Sounds like a food allergy. I suggest trying the wheat grass/barley grass water mix instead (I like green magma).  Drink some powerade, eat lean chicken breast, and take hot baths with baking powder and epsom salts to flush it out.

If you don't want to dump it- Mix it with water to make a paste and use it as a facial mask (your skin feels real good and smooth afterwords) I also put in my hair to make it smoothe and rinse out in the shower (only do this if you have black hair, I don't recommend it for blondes, redheads, and light brunettes). best of luck to you.

  3. With spirulina you are supposed to take small doses for the first couple of weeks to avoid the relevant side effects and then you gradually increase the dose to the desired level.  Apparently your body gradually gets used to it.

  4. I've been using it in pill & powder form for 3 years and this is the first time I'm hearing that it might cause allergies!!

Are you definitely sure that it is not contaminated or do you know how it has been dried??

You see Chlorella is another form of blue green algae that has a very high amount of Chlorophill and is a very good AntiOxidant, infact they say that it is better that Spirullina in some ways if you were to choose only one of them!!

So first, try to find a good brand of Spirullina (I would suggest in an airtight/sealed container) or you can switch to Chlorella and try that for a while... Oooooooooor you might have a high level of heavy metals in your body that Spirulina is helping your body to excrete!?

    Good Luck

ps The best & safest form of chorella is German "Algomed" (processed in glass airtight tubes)...

    Good Luck

  5. sounds like your mildly or moderately allergic, id probably stop taking it.

  6. your side effects will also depend upon other medications and supplements you are taking.

Cut back on your dosage to at least 1/4 of what you are taking until you get used to it. If it still bothers you then reconsider your supplements.

What I would ask is what is your general health and reasoning for taking it, other supplements and meds and how they possibly affect you.

When any medicine or supplement effects you adversly you need to cut back and/ or cut out the dosage in order to properly heal. Remember not everyone is the same and thus the instructions and/or warnings may or may not apply to you, while you may only tolerate small doses someone else may need double .  Adjust your dosage as to how you feel and if you keep a written journal when you start new supplements, meds or diets, it will help you to look back and decide what is working best for you.

  7. You have to start off with small amounts and I recommend getting it in capsules so it releases slower into your system and makes it easier for you to obsorb. I found a combination algae supplement called Power 3. It has Spirulina, Chlorella, and Blue Green Algae. It works great and I havent had any negative side affects. I'll give you a link if you want to check it out. You should read some of the studies and testimonials. Hope this helps you. Blessings
