Question:

Will my stallion be depressed when he is gelded?

I have a 7 year old stallion and we are gelding him this tuesday. You see, I am a junior and though he is well behaved a junior can't show him as a stallion. He has been previously used as a breeding stallion and I am wondering if he will be depressed when he doesn't have his "baggage" any longer. If so, how long will he be sad and will his personality totally change?

  1. Well he is a older horse and has  breed If he is a ggod horse around others he'll be ok

But if he acts bad like around mares You might have a problem

    Most will be very sore

He is going to have a tough time

Most older horses that have been breeding has a thick cord to his testes and when cut he might bleed abit more he will be very sore ,,

So make sure you walk him

and even trailer him ,,it helps with the bleeding !

He might be a bit depressed after like a in a few months because he won't have the hormons and a bit confused

But Most likly he'll be O.K.

And yes his personallity will change

some don't,,, so do not count on it ,

    Just hope it does

    Good luck

Make sure you take care of him really good AFTER !!!

  2. well when an animals "Baggage" is lost, so is their production of male hormones. Testosterone is made their, and without it his personality will most definitely be changed. Although i'm sure he should be fine though. I mean im sure any guy would be depressed for a while if they lost theirs. I'd be, hahahaha.

  3. Absolutely not, you have nothing to worry about, in fact it will make him not vulnerable to deaceses like testicular cancer. he will be naturaly calmer and less agressive. for he wont have all the natural tostosurone flowing through his body. your stalion will happier and healthier as a gelding. and if you feel that he seems to be depressed, do small things to make life a bit for fun and interesting for him, like giving him treats and buying him toys(like rubber horse balls, to fling and kick aruond.) and if he gets along well with other horses give him a buddy to relax with, because even horses liek to sit back and have some fun. i hope i have helped you. and sorry for the mispelled words. :)

  4. He most likely will not be 'depressed'. He may sulk around for a few days after, as I can imagine he will be fairly sore.

Stallions who are gelded normally calm down, and act better towards other males. He may still act like a stallion around mares, as I've seen cases where geldings still try to breed mares, even without their testicles.

  5. There is a good chance that he will be depressed but he might be one of the few that it doesn't affect.  However, the older the horse is, the harder it is on the horse to be gelded.  My stallion is 15 years old, and even though he is still a brat sometimes (most of the time actually), our vet told us he could die if we did it, and if he lived, he wouldn't necessarily be any more tame.

  6. Yes, he'll be depressed.  But he'll be depressed because he's had surgery and he hurts, not because he has a clue he lost the baggage.

Seven is late to geld a horse, particularly one used for breeding.  They've developed a lot more blood vessels and so on.  This won't be a quick and easy surgery or recovery.

His personality is less likely to change radically because he's older, but it will change.

  7. yes ,i am a horseman,my family all have been ,and yes your horse will change,we believe that you take the spirit of the animal when this happens, but it is common practice among working horse for it makes them more manageable,so if he is a working horse it is for the best

  8. I would say no. We gelded a stallion several months ago. He was a little lazy for about a week...but after that he picked right back up to his normal self. Keep him away from  your mares for a week or two cuz he could still be productive. Your vet should tell you all this.
