Question:

Will my sweet peas stop flowering?

I know that I have to keep cutting the blooms to keep them flowering, but I'm going away for a week soon. I'm worried that by the time I get back they will have gone to seed and stopped producing flowers. It's a shame as it's the first time I've grown them and they are gorgeous. They smell delightful in the kitchen. Please could somebody advise/ease my fears.

I'm an experienced gardener, but not in the line of sweet peas.

Thank you

  1. A week isn't going to hurt. When you get back take out the dead ones and they#ll be fine

  2. A week will not be long enough for them to stop flowering.  A day or so before you go, pick any that are in flower, or ready to open and give them to a friend.  That will encourage your sweetpeas to produce more blooms which should be there to greet you when you get back.  And your friend will be delighted to have a bunch of sweetpeas from you.

    Enjoy your week away.

  3. Get someone trustworthy in to cut them otherwise yes - they will stop flowering.

A friend asked her daughter to do this for her whilst they were away for a week - the daughter lived at home anyway but decided not to bother until the day her parents were coming back.  Too late by then though.

  4. I have had wild sweetpeas growning here for abourt 20 years or so..I gathered the seeds in a meadow where I found them when horseback riding once.  Anyway I never keep the seed pods cut off...I cut the flowers sometimes for an arrangement in the house but never make a special effort to keep the seed pods down and they bloom till frost.  I think that the few days that you will be gone will not be a problem...you can cut all of the pods off if you want to when you get home and that will probably give the plant a boost for reflowering.
