Question:

Will my teeth start to shift if I don't wear my retainer for 2 weeks? (just got braces off 10 days ago)?

I had a crown lengthening for a tooth and now I have a protective dressing over it that I can't take off for 2 weeks. I just got my braces off recently and I've been wearing my retainer every day until today when I learned that I won't be able to wear it again until the dressing comes off, which will be in roughly 2 weeks. Will my teeth start shifting right away???

  1. i would think that it would not shift your teeth but not for sure!

  2. Hi Allie,

I would start wearing your retainer as soon as possible because your teeth will shift if you don't. When you put it in the first time after this you will notice a difference in how it feels. It shouldn't be obvious though, but you will fell a difference.

  3. Yes, your teeth will shift!

If you only got your braces off ten days ago, you really should have consulted your orthodontist before having a procedure that would keep you from wearing your retainer.

  4. Call your ortho ASAP and tell them what is going on. I'm sure he/she will adjust your retainer. Your teeth may not shift back exactly, but they will begin to shift. Nip it in the butt before things change to much.

  5. u can use ur retainer with dressing if its at the lip side not the tongue side, or conslt ur orthodontist, as teeth can move back in less than 1 week

  6. not right away. but i can tell u that they will shift. sorry. how much they will all depends on how they were before. if they were bad, then there is a chance that they will move slightly more. i think that u should consult ur ortho. tell them what is going on.
