Will my upconverting DVD Player upconvert with HD Cables?

I just bought a Philips DVP3962 and it says Upconvert to 1080i HDMI. Now what I wanted to know is does it automatically upconvert or do I have to select something (Didn't see anything in the menus) and I don't have a HDMI cable so I used the Red, Blue, and Green HD Cables. Will it do the same job?

  1. You must use HDMI cables to get the up-converted video.  Component cables will just output 480 because of p****y/copy protection concerns.

Somewhere in the setup menu of your DVD player you can tell the box to output 480, 720 or 1080 on the HDMI cable.

  2. The only player that will upconvert via component cables is the Oppo 971 player. By law they will tell you it can't, but in discussions with Oppo reps and by my own testing, it does indees upconvert via component.

Yours will need an HDMI cable to upconvert to "simulated" HD.  You have to understand the DVD disc itself is 480 lines of resolution and nothing will ever change that.  Upconversion simulates surrounding pixels to give you the illusion of HD, but it still is only 480 lines of resolution.

Buy a PS3 and with Bluray you will get 1080p lines of resolution. True HD
