We are leaving from Vancuver Canada and going to Alaska on a 7 day cruise. Will verizon wireless cell phones work in that area? Will you have to pay extra charges? I know, I need to call the phone company to be certain, but just wonder if anyone has had this experience...

  1. Many cruise lines (including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and NCL) now offer cellular service onboard their ships when they are underway...  The service is compatible with the 4 major US carriers, however you will be charged by your cellular provider as if you are roaming internationally.  If you have specials like free nights and weekends or unlimited texting etc... they will not be in effect for usage onboard the ship.  Charges can add up quickly onboard, if you can try and keep your phone off while underway to save yourself from getting hit with a huge roaming bill.

Once you are ashore Verizon has coverage in most ports.  You'll be charged the same as if you were traveling any place in the United States.

  2. Yes the phone will work while you are in or very close to port cities.  Remember you will need to get a signal from a phone tower.  There will probably be an extra charge, depending upon your phone plan.  Check with your provider.

  3. No cellphones will work on a cruise or on a island. If you want to talk to somebody fromt the ship then you have to get either a phone card and you will get talking time for free or you will have to use the cruises phones and pay by the minute.

  4. You are going to Alaska one of the greatest place to see and you are worried about a phone ? Leave the stupid phone home and enjoy the cruise and sights.
