  1. No - the formats and technologies are completely different.  Your BluRay player may be able to play regular DVD's but it depends on the manufacturer.

  2. There are no more HD DVD, read the news. Blueray won. And it wont play on your old dvd player.

  3. Nope

  4. No Blu-Ray discs only play on Blu-Ray players.

    Same with HD-DVD

An HD-DVD player will play regular DVDs though.

  5. No and no. Stinks don't it?

  6. You MUST have a Blu-Ray player to play Blu-Ray DVDs unless you spent $1,000.00 or so on the HD DVD player/Blu-Ray combo.  Most Blu-Ray DVD players will also play standard DVDs but will not play HD DVDs (again, unless you spent $1,000.00 or so on the HD DVD/Blu-Ray combo).

  7. Nope. You need a PS3 or a blu-ray player to play blu-ray. HD dvds are getting phased out. You can't play any DVDs on blu-ray players.

  8. the blu-ray dvd's will play on your older dvd player but I dont thik that the hd dvds will play on the new blu-ray player

  9. Your new Blu-Ray DVD's will ONLY play on a Blu-Ray machine (they will not play on either a standard or HD DVD player).

HD DVDs will not play on a Blu-Ray machine.

There are some *very* expensive machines which are formatted to play either Blu-Ray and HD DVD's

The visual quality of both Blu-Ray and HD DVD's however are only really noticable if you have a Hi-Definition Television to watch them on.

Both HD DVD machines and Blu-Ray machines will play "standard" format DVD's.

  10. No and No.

Blu-Ray Discs (BD's or BRD's) will not play in a DVD player the use a deferent laser that is Blue/violet that is a much cmaller ray of light to read the data that the red laser of DVD players will not read.

HD-DVD players use yet another blue laser that can not read Blu-Ray Discs, just as Blu-Ray players can not read HD-DVD's

The real issue is can my new Blu-Ray player play my old DVD's.....YES! All your old DVD's can still play in a Blu-Ray player and they will be upconverted to near high def quality, not as good as a Blu-Ray Disc, but better than if they were played on a standard DVD player.
