The gap between rich and poor is wider than ever. But that doesn't seem to bother Britain's wealthiest earners. In an extract from their new book, Polly Toynbee and David Walker describe the jaw-dropping arrogance they encountered when they asked some of the fat cats to justify their lives of luxury

  1. Yes!Along with being known as the party of the incompetent!

  2. New Labour has masqueraded as a Socialist party for far too long . They are now a party that Is Anti-Worker-  Anti-Pensioner -

    Anti-Students-.

They are unashamedly Pro-Taxation inventors -Agency for selling Our Assets to Foreigners.Labour politicians are now among the Privileged rich of Britain.  They are everything the Conservatives tried to be and Failed .Labour Masquerade goes on unchecked .We Need some Ideas to depose the bad apples among them to the ranks of the working Class of Poor they have created .Our Young citizens are now our only Hope.

  3. Poor old Clem Attlee and the rest are spinning in their graves over this shower having the cheek to call themselves the Labour Party.

  4. You won't like this Answer but here goes anyway.

There will aways be a gap between the rich and the poor unless and until each persons income is determined by some committee or other.Otherwise how else do you eradicate it. Please tell me how that is going to work ?

According to the article "top" earnings for tax purposes start at £39,825 p.a ( in 2007). Although that is no doubt a reasonably comfortable salary it does not in my book make anyone a "fat cat" when the median UK income is around £22K p.a.How high do you have to go beyond that before you achieve that particular status.Who cares if maybe a couple of thousand Hurray Henry's couldn't possibly survive on less than £100K per annum or what their personal attitudes are.So what ? As long as I don't have to mix with these people their attitudes don't affect me and as long as they are not stealing from me what they take home does not cost me anything. Please don't tell me that if someone is earning over £100k that they are stealing it from someone else.Proudhon died long ago.

Socialism has to be about a lot more than just a bit of cheap moralising before it makes sense as a viable political programme and  commands majority support amongst the majority of the working population.

  5. Indeed, New Labour is all champagne and no socialism.

Furthermore, many of the super-rich are not even British citizens. For 'tax reasons' they are non-doms. Although they still get to give 'political donations' to the two main parties.

What though is worse is that the 'fat cat' philosophy has leapt from the private into the public sector. Now we have the pointless-and-useless on our councils and Quangos helping themselves to 'the market rate'.
