Will not go through the wash cycle

Question

My dishwasher will fill up with water and then will not go through the wash cycle. We left it continue through the cycles and it went right to the dry cyle and we smelled something burning. Appeared to be the heating, half in water and half out of the water. We pulled the plug on it.
