Question:

Will oil-based paint stick to porcelain?

How well will it work to paint porcelain with oil-based paint? Will it adhere okay? The porcelain has a smooth, shiny finish. Oil-based paint is so durable it seems like it would, but I don't know a lot about things like this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. No! Porcelain paint is used for porcelain, but as others have mentioned, it's not really a DIY project.

When we had to paint a replacement bathroom sink to match the existing tub & commode, we called our local Kohler supply houses to see who did this kind of work. We disconnected the sink from the wall and brought it to the fellow's shop, and he was able to match the paint beautifully.

It cost more to have the sink painted than to buy a new one, but we were dealing with vintage 1940s fixtures and didn't have that option.

  2. In a word,no!Paint'll run, streak and smear on porcelain, which has an impervious finish.

    Two possible alternatives,remove the porcelain.

If wall tiles or similar, there'll be a right mess.

Should something like a sink or a shower tray be involved, specialists can coat these. The work's expensive and it's probably simpler to replace.

Sorry to be a wet blanket!

  3. NO.  It might slightly dye it or tint it some.  But it will probably look like a mess.  Why are you wanting to dye it anyways?  Is it a bathtub, sink, toilet?  If you are trying to fix chips you can buy porcelain appliance paint, but it only comes in like a small fingernail polish size.  You can purchase it at Lowes or Home Depot.

    Hope this helps.

  4. No and it would be toxic as well.  They make a paint specifically to adhere on glass, ceramics and porcelain.  There are several brands and you can find them in the craft stores, like Michaels and JoAnn Etc.  And, for best adhesion, purchase both the primer and sealer and make certain to thoroughly clean the surface (rubbing alcohol works) before applying any of it.  Even the oils from your hands affect the paint's performance.
