Will pet zebra finches nest in a box in the air, or does it need to be one on the ground?

I brought two Zebra Finches, and I was wanting to know whether a box in the air (in their cage) will do just as good a job as a box on the bottom of the cage? Please answer!

just hang the nest in the corner of the cage and they will start laying eggs like crazy

Definitely up of the ground. Preferably were mice can't gain access.
