I am thinking of installing a plexiglass backsplash in my kitchen. I plan on s******g precut large plexi pieces to the wall. Is this safe to do as a backsplash behind a gas stovetop?

  1. Behind a stove or gas hob you MUST use either glass, metal or ceramic materials as a backsplash. If it caught fire and burnt your kitchen out you may find the insurance didn't cover you for making an unsafe alteration.

  2. I wouldn't do it. The heat radiating from pots and pans could cause it to melt. Plexiglass will also scratch easily when trying to clean.

  3. It could burn, yes. It will discolor where heat is more intense, and it will also collect grease splatters that you cannot wash off. Been there, done that.

  4. Over ten years ago a friend wallpapered at the back splash.  To protect the wallpaper I secured a 30" x 24" Plexiglas panel to the wall behind the freestanding gas range using flat head screws and finish washers at the four corners.  I anticipated that the panel would be messy, difficult to clean, (which it was not) would yellow, or craze, or soften and sluff, or melt in extreme heat and would require periodic replacement.  It did none of these.  The wallpaper gradually discolored everywhere except behind the Plexiglas panel.

Further investigation showed that the self ignition temperature (spontaneous combustion) of acrylic is between 850 degree F and 869 degree F and the temperature at which the material will ignite in the presence of a flame is between 550 degree F and 570 degree F.  It has similar combustion properties to the cabinets on either side of it.   Still, I would encourage the use of a non-combustible material at this location.

But if you use the Plexiglas, don't cook at over 800 degrees, or cook on an uncontrolled open flame.

  5. Plex glass is plastic. It melts and burns. Don't use it near a flame or heat.

  6. Why not use glass?
