Will plugging a HDM1 cable from my new HDTV to a DVD player with a HDM1 output improve my picture quality?

  2. Maybe. It depends on what you are currently using to connect the dvd player to the TV.

    Since the dvd player has HDMI, it's safe to assume it's an upconverting dvd player. That means it converts and enhances each frame of video to HD format. If you are using regular composite A/V cables, you will notice a big difference, right away, in your dvd's picture. It won't look as good as HD video, but it looks much better than standard definition. I'd say it's about halfway between, it's in HD resolution but it can only be enhanced so far.

    If you're already using component video cables, though, you probably won't notice any difference, because those can carry the upconverted signal, up to 1080i, to your TV as well. In that case you've already seen your dvd's upconverted about as much as they can be. Getting them to 1080p, HDMI level wouldn't alter their picture quality any further.
