Logically it will depend on 2 factors:

1. How long and with what frequency  and with what form Ponting plays

2. How long and with what frequency  and with what form Sachin plays

Lara is the static factor in this assessment. The above 2 are imponderables given that both players, esp Sachin has shown a tendency for frequent injuries. (Ponting has a bad back)

It will depend upon how long Ponting can continue to play test cricket. If he continuesto play for another 3 years, he may be able to break the present record of Brian Lara.

Sachin is staying in the team becoz he has had rely bad form and still kept him so he will keep going

Depends on long Ponting will be playing. If he keeps scoring

a century in each series and have few more 50+s, then why

not. But the question is how long will be playing. If he plays for

another 2-3 years there is a good chance that he will.

Lately Sachin is being injured and will have to see how long he

will be playing. Lara is already retired and he will not be a factor

in this equation.

Ponting will pass Lara because he has retired and he also will pass Tendulkar because Ponting has more years playing cricket ahead of him. Also if Ponting keeps playing like this he will easy pass them.
