Question:

Will putting a rug on top of grass kill it?

I'm having an outdoor wedding and I want to use my persian rugs under the tent. I thought it would protect the lawn from the chair legs, but will the rugs smother the grass in just 1/2 day? The rugs will probably be down from around 9 a.m. to around 3 or 4 p.m. August is hot, but if it's dry, I'm hoping the grass will be ok. Does anyone have any idea if grass can survive that?

  1. well, my family had an above ground pool one summer, and when we moved it all the grass under it was dead. But that was a WHOLE summer. The Grass should be OK if its only for a couple hours but it really depends on the weather. sry i dont know more! Oh, and congragulations! I hope the wedding goes well.

  2. no it will not kill the grass, grass is almost impossible to kill, true story I threw old persian rugs on my grass to kill it , they laid on it for six months and I STILL HAVE GRASS! IT 'S ROOT SYSTEM IS TO CONDENSED,I SAY KILL THE GRASS AND PLANT BEAUTIFUL PLANTS AND FLOWERS,WHICH I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY DONE,BUT THE GRASS WILL NOT DIE EASY, YOU HAVE TO SHAVE IT COVER IT WITH SCREEN AND SMOTHER IT IN COMPOST,EVEN AT THAT POINT I DONT BELIEVE ITS DEAD IT JUST CANT PENETRATE THE SCREEN. COVER IT, UNCOVER IT WATER IT AND LOVE IT, IT WONT DIE!

  3. if the grass is well watered and happy to begin with, it will be fine after just those six hoursespecially shaded by the tent.... I'd worry if the rug was dark and it was in the sun!........ but I'd be sure someone took up the rugs and perhaps raked the area lightly to stand it all back up and maybe sees to giving it water after that.....

    congrats!.. have a wonderful day!!

  4. I would think that once the wedding is over and the rug pulled up the grass will be OK.  It may go into shock, but a few hours isn't going to kill it.  Now if it sat there for a couple of days that would be different.

  5. If the grass does not have access to open sunlight, it cannot commence photosynthesis, and will die out of lack of nutrients. During the night, it has just enough nutrients stored to last until dawn, but if you cover it for 7 hours, it won't make it through the night.

The grass will die. Don't put things on it during the day.

  6. That is a great idea to keep it from getting messed up and holes all in it. The rugs won't kill it for the few hours. Anything more then a day or 2 and you will have yellow grass then it will die  shortly after. You should be fine just for that one day!

  7. For half the day, your grass should be just fine.  Make sure to water it well the next day when the rugs are up.  It's hot here, too.  We have trip digits right now with high humidity cause of Dolly.  You should be fine.  Just don't let the dogs pee on them while they are outside....:)

Dog breeder, with a ton of carpets out back.

  8. I say yes the grass will survive that short of a time being covered. It will however die if left there for long periods which doesn't seem to be the case. It actually will probably fair better with the rugs than the foot traffic.

  9. No it won't kill the grass for that short time. When youv'e finished  for the day,put th hose on the grass overnight.

  10. No, won;'t kill it , but it will stress it enough to lay it flat and make it ugly for a week or so.

My son is getting married August 16 and we are doing the same thing.

24 hours is the most the carpets will be down and I am sure that the grass can recover just do not try to mow it for an extra few days and don't rake it to help it stand.

Nature will correct it self in about 7 to 10 days, then you can mow high after that and continue usual seasonal lawn care.

             Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

  11. if it is really hot yes it will kill the grass, kind of, a week or two of care will bring it back

a slip & slide put a big brown strip in my yard. but it was fixed in about a week

  12. For that short time the grass will be matted down but it should survive.

  13. In the tent, for only 1/2 a day, you may be OK. Much longer and the heat will kill it by itself. Some of these others that say their lawn recovered, probably meant the weeds grew back from seed. or a warm season grass will recover. Just remember that when the wedding is over, your work is not done.

try a test in the shade somewhere.

  14. yes the grass will not die in that short of time... sometimes grass turns yellow but it just needs some sun light and water but with your short period it wont happen

  15. NO not if you take them off right after your done with needing them!
