I am with Sky, and I see they are one of the companies who have signed up to the new scheme. Will the ISP check every household who downloads a huge amount (for instance 30gb a month)? I read that they are mainly targetting downloads from torrents, does this mean I can continue to use rapidshare? If not, is there any way I can hide my identity from my own ISP to avoid them spotting me?

  1. Personnaly, I don't really see how they can do it.  With millions of customers, downloading 100's of millions of bits of information, unsecure wireless connections, how can they keep that much information stored, I've been with same internet provider for years, they have a list of everything I've downloaded, I doubt it, besides most of it has been deleted long ago, so how can they prove it, anybody can say, well I have this list..etc. That proves nothing.  How do they know someone hasn't hacked my wireless connection?  I mean internet kiddie orn freaks who hack into your connection from outside your house, the cops have to actually come and stake out your house.  How many poeple are they going to have to pay to monitor this list, and who is going to pay for it, the record company?  Movie companies are still making record profits, if I download somethinig watch it and like it, then i go see it in the theatre, but these days the majority of movies are only worth a free download, besides they are on TV within a year anyway.  How many pirate dvds or music albumsdo you see for sale, I know I don't see many, I mightwatch a movie on my computer, the it's securely trashed.  Besides within a year there will be some new hacker software to bypass them.  It's a battle they can't win.

    Edit: Cero,

I access this site from many different computers form all over the place, different countries internet cafes libraries, friends etc. How can thy even know it me, identity theft doesn't just happen with wallets.  The people that are fined or imprisoned are the ones with hundreds of pirated dvds, besides have you ever met anyone of these alleged people that have been fined, I haven't.  Most likely it's just more propoganda.

  2. Every single music file or movie file is recorded against an IP address.. They know everyone who downloads anything from the Internet. If you have downloaded or uploaded music anywhere on the Internet your IP address will already be on file.

If the BPI want to prosecute anyone, all they need do is type in your IP address and everything you've downloaded will be listed.

You can hide your identity by using a proxy server, but they know that and will probably close that loop hole.

Edit;  Everything an individual does on Yahoo is recorded against their IP address. That will remain on file for about 40 years. It's the same as texting on a phone. Texts messages will remain on file the same length of time.

Don't be complacent, everything you do on the Internet is recorded against your IP address. There is more than enough storage space available.

Some people on P2P have found out already about their actions. Many have been fined an out of court settlement. They were all presented with a list of everything they downloaded or uploaded.

    Edit;  Elliott Ness

I don't know the Darwin's but they were still found guilty. You either believe the news you hear or you don't. There are ways around the system and you are right, they can't find everyone, but most do it on their own computers and it's a bit like speeding in your car, you may be one of the lucky ones who never gets caught.

It's also against the law. Many people like to chose which laws they are prepared to break, but if you get caught at least they knew abourt it.

Where I live, and it's not the UK, they are pretty hot on it here, but I still read the UK news.
