Question:

Will running 40 miles a day (slowly) improve my marathon time?

I'm running the San Diego Rock and Roll marathon on June 1st, 2008; just wondering if I run 40 miles a day (slowly or split up between 2 runs, i.e 20 miles in the morning and 20 at night) will give me a sub 3 hour marathon...

I can run 40 miles easily, just very slow- if I keep this up, will my endurance and speed improve?

Thanks!

  1. you should run like 25-30 miles every other day and on the other days run about 10 but run them faster.

  2. Yes, i think so. You might should ask a doctor if thats okay though.

  3. just run it faster..dont do it slow

  4. yeah u should add hills to your run but dont run 40 miles a day that is way to much and i think thats too much because im the number one freshman at my school. but i would say run 10 miles every other day then on the days u dont run 10 miles run 5 miles because running 40 miles a day just wears your body down and your body wont improve. trust me i tried this.

  5. no. i dont think it'll help at all if you run it too slowly. you could try starting with a small base, and adding couple miles each week. 40 miles a day for 7 days is 280 miles a week, for 4 months is a lot of miles.

i would rather just run maybe like 15-20 miles at a quick temp to improve your marathon time.

  6. Please don't!! Your body would never be able to heal or improve from each previous workout and you would just break-down and have compound injuries. You can Cram for a test but not for a marathon without burnout.

  7. that is seriously over-doing it.  you are going to end up hurting yourself more than helping yourself.  you don't even want to run 20 miles more than a couple times during your training.
