I just joined my high school cross country team and was wondering if doing all the running will get me in shape or improve my swimming times when I start high school swimming in the winter??? Also besides cross country what else will help me improve my swimming times before high school swimming starts in october??

  1. Well running will help you get in shape for any sport.  But Swimming is the best cardo workout you can do.  So in the long run swimming will help your times.  Find a gym with a indoor pool like the YMCA that you can practice at.

  2. Do work on your arms.

  3. the leg parts

but you need to work the back-arm muscles too for hand strokes

  4. It will help but it wont really get you in shape, swimming and running use totally different muscles.

  5. you should swim to make your shape and learn new tricks yourself!

  6. Well as a former swimmer I can definately say that as far as training goes, swimming is really in a class all its own. The endurance you will build from cross country will start you off better than somebody who has never swam before but swimming laps is the only thing that will really get you in shape for it.

  7. It most certainly will, especially since cardio plays a big part in swimming. Weight lifting will also help you increase the power in your kicks and strokes.

  8. Running cross country will help your swimming a lot because it strengthens your core and respiratory system which you use in swimming. Other sports that will help you in swimming are anything involving running.

  9. No. Swimming will, though.

  10. It will help you along the way but swimming really is the only activity that will get you ready for swimming.  Go to the Y and start doing laps.

  11. it should help with your stamina. and over all physical shape. I think swiming has a lot to do with upper body strength.  You have to have strong and fast arms to move the water. maybe work on your arm muscles and their flexibility.

  12. It's will help with the cardio, but you need to work out your upper body

  13. Running helps you get in shape for everything... it improves your endurance and helps tone head to toe.  Another you might want to try is free weights.  Michael Phelps started them and has been unstoppable ever since.

  14. It will certainly help you to be in better physical condition over all. I suppose that it couldn't hurt. Ask a swim coach. You you will likely  get a better answer than you will in here.

  15. well i do both and i can def. say running HELPS get u in shape for anything. BUT u also need to swim b/c somehow it works ur heart differently.. at the start of my season i was running 10K's but when i swam for the first time in months i was out of breath after 2 laps.

  16. running gets you in shape for pretty much everything you do. So get started!

  17. Swimming is really in a class of its own as far as training for it goes.  Sort of like gymnastics
