Will running the car air vent waste gas (not running A/C, just having the air fan on)?

No, only when you switch on the AC unit will there be circulation of gas.

To check this,

open the bonnet of the car ( apply hand breaks)

start the vehicle

switch on the blowers

check if there are any bubbles in the gas cylinder - near engine ( there will not be any)

Switch on the AC unit ( now you fund bubbles in the cylinder - which shows that the gas is being circulated)

Not by comparison to A/C.  The air fan is electrical off the battery/alternator
