  1. They can already to a certain extent. But why would you want to do that? All emotions have their purpose. Without them, their would be no human race, we would have become extinct shortly after our evolution.

It's hard to mate if you're dead because a tiger attacked you, and you just didn't give a c**p that he was following you in the first place...

  2. that's why we have prozac... wellbutrin and all the others.

  3. The actual reason why we have negative emotions is to tell us something is wrong. If you remove negative sensations, ie. pain etc.. You will never know that your body is going through physical stress and you will eventually find that you probably end up a bit sick...

It seems like you want a Brady Bunch life.

Its not gonna happen that way. Sorry to tell you that.

Life is only interesting if it some negative and positive moments in it.

If you really want to be happy--- Pills won't bring you happiness.

    Just a thought, haha.

Anyways, I guess a way that a scientist to be able to take away your negative emotions...is for you to fall in love with one. Generally the love of you life usually takes away the pain from any terrible situation of your life.

  4. no because emoitions are encoded in DNA. If they take it out, who knows what eles they are taking out. Its to dangerous

  5. all emotions serve a purpose, taking pills for them is wrong...that's why I disagree strongly with the current anti depressant craze, particularly in children...

  6. hope not, dat would just be going toooo far

  7. BAD IDEA.  And probably not a possible one.  We can never be certain which physiological things are linked so it could affect so many things we don't intend.  hormones affect emotions and hormones are the main controllers of all the bodies functions so messing with them could change many things that to you are unrelated.  Emotions need to be dealt with environmentally, antidepressants etc. are the closest you're going to get without raising big issues.  You can only manage them, not remove the emotion completely.

    And I'm a geneticist.

Those are necessary in some ways. And do you know whether either of those are linked to any other necessary emotions? I bet you don't.  And on what do you base them as unnecessary? they are extreme negatives of emotions that we DO need.  You clearly don't know much about physiology, biology or psychology. People need environmental treatment to deal with those. We just have to accept that not everyone will be cured but try and maximise our treatment to minimize suffering and suicide etc.

And I'm not trying to say you're stupid or anything, it is just quite clear that you don't properly understand what damage could be done here.

  8. There already do that to a degree with drugs. And they'll do it by isolating sections of the brain, or the hormones that cause them or the DNA. But why would you want to mess with Mother Nature? What makes you think negative emotions aren't necessary to survival? AND, who will decide what those emotions are?

  9. Scientists have a hard time taking away emotions. It seems that most of the medications out there simply lock one into a particular emotion or numb his senses so much as to make him unaware of negative feelings.

This is not playing god, however like mentioned above. To say that is to say all medical practice is playing god.

  10. Scientists try to play God but they'll never succeed!

  11. depends...on what the emotion is..

  12. I hope not

  13. sure, we do it to a certain extent now I think any serious attept to remove all emotion would be justly critizised in western countries
