Will separating a parakeet kill it?

If you seperate a parakeet from his partner will it die from being lonley or something, thats what my brother told me at least... Is it true?

  1. it may be... depends on how strong of a bond they have, but i have seen this happen before with finches, and it happened with my friends parakeets too.

    it's usually best to try and keep them together.

  4. If they have been companions for most of their life, they can certainly pout and stop eating. When a small bird stops eating for a coupleof days, it can be enough to kill them. Birds are communal creatures, they don't function as well alone, especially parakeets, lovebirds and cockatiels. They will do well as companions for people, but they do need attention and quite a bit of it. Why are you separating them? Are they mated?  If you do separate them, make sure that you are able to give them both attention, as they are emotional creatures.  Try finding a local breeder of parakeets or your local vet and ask them the best way to separate the birds.
