  1. most homes with water softeners do not run the softened in pipes that go to the outside hoses..... that water is okay for the garden... be very aware that the inside plants will be the ones to suffer most from the dissolved salts in the soft water at the sink.....

  2. As with all things the devil is in the details.  If your house has a softner you might have elevated sodium levels however your softner may only be installed to treat your indoor water use.  Aslo I forget the level of sodium tolerated by grass and trees but its quite high on the order of 150 ppm...If the water is naturally soft, ie you do not have a water softner for the house then it is unlikely that the sodium levels are an issue at all. So the previous answers were both right but it depends on your specific situation.  Your local water department (ask for water quality) will be only too happy to help can help you.

  3. No. Its just water without all the minerals in it. You can drink soft water. So can your plants.

  4. It is best not to use soft water on your plants if you have an alternative.  Softened water has a higher sodium(salt) level  than unsoftened water and is not too good for plants as the salt can build up in the soil and cause problems.
