I'm a young lady and I'm writing a novel that involves guns. I would really appreciate a little bit of help with this. I would like to know how to use sniper rifles; the fancy kind that a high class assassin would use and also about handguns, also the kind that an assassin would use. I'll read even the longest posts as long as you can help me out. Please explain it as simply as possible.

  1. Abby, a couple of sources for you to check out would be to go to the local library and look for a copy of Janes weapons of the world. There are actually several good books about different types of firearms available at libraries, book stores and the wipidea online listings. As to how to use a sniper rifle; I would reccommend two things. First read the story of Carlos Hatchcock, Marine Sniper. Its a true story of an interesting and remarkable man. Second, find a listing for local rifle ranges in your area and ask about long range shooting and Palma matches. If you find the right group there WILL be one or two people there who have military training. Theres even a couple of us online. Your asking about details of 'assassin' type weapons is intriguing. Just about anything can be used. The Moussad trained some of their folks with 22s, our Seals use 30 caliber and 50 caliber rifles, there are new 416 caliber rifles being tested. It would be interesting to see what type of book you end up writing. I would recommend doing alot of research and rely on trusted sources for your references.

  2. the Barrett 50 is a 50 caliber sniper rifle that can kill a man at over a mile and a half away it is very simple the clip is which holds the ammo is loaded with 10 bullets and then the clip is loaded it to the bottom of the rifle and then pull the slide back which is the leaver on the right side of the gun and a round is loaded it ot the chamber

the 1911 colt is a .45 caliber pistol it is very accurate and can have a silencer put on it which greatly reduces the sound of the pistol.the Barrett 50 can also be fitted with a silencer

  3. This article will explain the different types of small arms and their functions.

  4. Abby,

First let me qualify this by saying I have no actual experience in contract killings / assignations  :-).

Here goes,  handguns will generally be semi automatics of a smaller caliber (The movies use big guns because they film easier and are sexier) 9mm down to .22 caliber. The reasons for this include ease in concealment, ease in suppressing  (silencing) the report of the gun, much of the ammunition in these calibers will already be subsonic (slower than the speed of sound) making the "silencer" work that much better. Rarely if ever would a revolver be used (although I have seen two built for the West German Government) due to the gap between the cylinder and the barrel which would allow for escaping gasses to make noise.

Rifles are another story all together.  Due to the extended ranges that a rifle may be used in the choice of calibers is much broader, virtually everything from a .22 Caliber centerfire to the .50 Caliber BMG round might be used. Rifle types will generally be either Bolt Action or Semi Automatic.

A suppressor may or may not be used depending on the senario of the shoot.  It will depending on the number of targets, the physical environment (noisy city, quiet rural area etc).

In some cases the weapons used will be abandoned after use and in other cases the shooter will take the firearms with them depending on conditions after the shoot and job requirement.

    Hope this helps you.

  5. Well if this is a high class assassin then he/she would probably use the most expensive and high quality sniper rifle possible then right? I suppose they might use the Barrett 82A1.

The Barrett 82A1 is a semi-automatic sniper rifle that cost around $10,000. The magazine/clip holds 10 rounds of .50BMG, which is the type of cartridge this sniper rifle fires. The .50BMG cartridge is 2.35" long and launches a huge 1/2 inch diameter bullet at speeds exceeding 2,500 feet per second. It has a maximum effective range of about 2,100 meters. So your assassin could inflict maximum damage from a very long distance away if he/she was a very experienced sniper.

Using the rifle start out simple enough. You load ten rounds of the .50BMG ammunition into the magazine and lock it into the rifle. Then you pull the bolt back and it loads a round into the chamber, which makes that famous cha-chung noise you always hear over and over again in the movies as everyone is loading up their guns and cocking them back. All you have to do now is pull the trigger to fire the rifle.

The more difficult aspect of sniping though is the site adjustment. At long ranges the cross hairs of the scope will not be sited in perfectly on your target. You will have to adjust it for windage and elevation. Even the temperature and humidity can make a difference in where the bullet travels at long ranges. At really long range you even have to take the Coriolis effect of Earth's rotation into account. There is a lot of training involved.

As far as handguns are concerned just pick something that looks cool. An assassin would use whatever handgun they like. Most likely they would want lots of ammunition capacity. I could see your assassin using a Glock with extended 33 round magazine or maybe even a Micro-UZI. Either of these guns could be obtained in fully automatic so that your assassin could just spray bullets and quickly change out magazines and reload without any problems.

  6. Question:  Will someone explain types of guns to me?

Answer:  I'll be happy to try... There are long guns and handguns.  Long guns (rifles n shotguns) are intended to be fired two-hand while held to the shoulder for support.

Handguns (revolvers n pistols) can be fired one-hand.

Sniper rifles.  No such thing.  A rifle is just a rifle until it is used by a sniper.  Example:  The infamous 'Kennedy Rifle' alleged to be the rifle used by a sniper in 1963 to assassinate JFK in Dallas was just a plain-Jane military surplus rifle purchased by mail-order for less than $20 US dollars.  It is a 6.5 Italian Carcano, not a particularly accurate or powerful rifle.  The shooter equipped it with a plain-Jane Weaver 4-power scope mounted at a 90 Deg. angle so that the windage would clear the bolt.  The only call to fame the 6.5 Carcano had (at the time) was that it was considered the fastest bolt-action military rifle in the world.  Another infamous sniper allegedly used a plain hunting rifle, a Remington 700 bolt-action 6mm caliber again with a 4x scope.  This one was supposedly used by the Texas Tower Sniper.  More recently those fools in Maryland used a plain-Jane .223 caliber carbine to wreck havoc and murder innocent people.

For the purpose of your novel you could state that your sniper selected a large caliber hunting rifle equipped with a high power telescopic sight.  If he needs rapid-fire capability then it should be an auto-loader like the Browning BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle), or a military-specs M-14 or FN FAL (both in 7.62x51 NATO caliber which is also known as a .308 Winchester).  If he needs to get off a single good shot, then a bolt action hunter or even a Ruger #1 single shot rifle would do.  The BAR could be in say .270 Winchester caliber to 7mm Remington Magnum.  The bolt action could be nearly any caliber but for long range shooting the .308 Winchester or the .30-06 Springfield caliber are stellar.  The rifle itself could be a Remington 700 w/bull barrel and something like Leupold 3x9 variable scope.  The Ruger number one could be in any caliber from say .243 Winchester (rather light) to .375 Ruger Magnum (very heavy caliber) and could use say a Zeiss high grade German-made 40mm 3x9 power Conquest Scope.

Feel free to e-mail me if you need further clarification.  I'm always happy to help a fellow writer.

  7. I'll let others explain the Handgun part of your questions....  See below for the sniper information you are interested in.....

  8. It's called a Daisy pump pellet gun. DUUUUUUDE! it will rip the skin off o a piece of cooked chicken. Aloha!

  9. There are two types of firearms. (guns are what shoot 100 pound rounds off of a ship)

1 -  firearms are either single shot or pump or semi-automatic.

    Includes:

Shotguns - pump, single shot, semi-auto

Rifles - pump, single shot, semi-auto

Handguns - single shot, semi-auto, revolver

    Muzzle Loader - Musket

2 - (actually called Class 3 weapon) firearms are the ones the anti's think we all own

They are the selective fire or fully automatic

Type 1 firearms are the ones for sale at Wal-mart or any other sporting goods store. Type 2 is a paperwork nightmare, approval from the fed and the local police department.

"I would like to know how to use sniper rifles"

I don't own one, never fired one of the fancy ones but I know a lot of competitive long range shooters that use Remington 700's. If you want to learn about a subject such as long range shooting (sniper) then I would find a range that does competitive long range shooting and hire some one to teach you.

As for handguns, look at the Glock, 1911 Government and the Beretta 92.

You can rent any of them at a range that rents firearms.

When it comes to firearms there is no better way to describe them other than to put you hand on them and shoot them.

Any description anybody gives would be like describing the color red to someone that has been blind all their life.

  10. This is a complicated question.  An assassin would probably work with something he is most familiar with and that could be dependent upon his/her country of origin and of course, the country where he/she is working.

For sniper rifles there are several to choose from that are used worldwide by multiple military and police units.

Steyr SSG...7.62x51 NATO (bolt action-common sniper rifle in Europe)

Remington 700....7.62x51 NATO ( bolt action-the US military uses this as it's basic platform for sniping..they designate the the weapon as the M-24 or the M-40, depending upon which branch..Army or Marines)

Heckler & Koch PSG-1...7.62x51 NATO (semi-automatic--I am unsure of any units that designate this as 'their' weapon...they are expensive and semi-autos have yet to make too many snipers happy...the brass flying out of the ejection port tends to give their position away pretty easily, but if your assassin were to need to engage multiple targets..it might be the best choice)

    Handguns

Semi-automatics are popular, so here are a few

Beretta PX4 Storm...9x19 (also known as the 9mm Parabellum) high capacity ( I think it is 18 rounds in the full size version)

    SIG-Sauer P-226...9x19, 15 rd. magazine capacity

    SIG-Sauer p-228...9x19, 13 rd magazine capacity ( a more compact version of the P-226)
