Well I think it has a lot to do with pop culture, TV shows like H20 & movies like Aquamarine.

But some people have always been drawn to the ocean and want to be a part of it.

nothing makes me think that, bcuz spells arent real, but i think it is a particular acute obsession just like there are sum ppl who wana be tigers or vampires.

The fascination comes from movies and book and stories that they hear... And 99% of them have no real concept as to what a real merperson really is...

Most of this is caused by movies and tv shows out there like H2o. I think that if a person truly wants to become a mermaid/man then it could be possible.

People love suspense...believeing an under water utopia where you have fins for legs is every normal little girls dream.  But reality bites...spells are for witches and worlocks to accompany their wishes for others.  Mermaids have more freedom, I'm guessing to roam around the oceans talking to fish named Nemo and Flounder, and a crab named sebastion...its just seems great.   Thats why the fascination stays in young minds.
