I was typing a paper and saved it on my dell laptop. I decided that I wanted to type it on a regular computer so I e-mailed it to myself through my g-mail. I then went to my regular computer and opened the file. After I typed a LOT more, I saved it, except I just hit 'save' not 'save as.' So I didn't know which file I saved it under. I realized this and went back to my g-mail to open the old file again to see where it opened, so I could follow through to get to it. But after a few files that I went through, one of them wasn't there but it said it was.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ ALL OF THAT PLEASE READ BELOW.

In summary, I lost my document and does anyone know how to search for a specific document on a dell computer. Above has more detail in case you ddn't read it.

  1. Click on start

    Search

    all files and folders

type the name of the file you were working on.

  2. Your computer probably saved it to a temporary folder; you did the right thing by following the path your computer takes by opening up the file again from your g-mail.  Once you do this, though, go up a folder and try looking in the other temporary folders there, and you will probably find your file.  If not, your computer may have deleted the temporary folder (if you restarted).

  3. Go My Computer > Search > Files and Folders.  Click When was it modified and enter Within the Last Week.

    -MM

  4. Easy - go to the start button, then to search, then to files and folders...

Choose your entire drive, and type some of the words you used in the file int he box marked "words within the file..."  It will take a little while, but you will get seach result showing all files and locations with those words.  Try to limit it to some words that are unique within the file

  5. I guess you have just replaced a file with a new file...

I think you have overwritten it..

There is no way to return that old file back..

  6. go to your start button>>search>>advanced search options. There will be a way to search for a word or phrase in a document. If you have a sentence or anything that you know was added to the new one look for that.

    Good luck!

P.S. Sometime things get saved in the weirdest of places. Hit more advanced options and check:

    Search system files

    Search hidden files and folders

    Search subfolders

    Search tape backup
