I'm working on a theoretical project involving south St. Louis, and I was just wondering if anyone would be willing to share what they know about the area? I'm mainly looking to know what the neighborhoods are like, what state a lot of the architecture is in, what businesses there are in the area, etc. Thank you so much!

  1. The city web site that the previous poster gave you will be helpful. Almost all of the homes are older brick or frame structures and there is little new construction. I'm guessing that you are considering south st louis as the area from Manchester on the north to the city limits on the south and from the city limits on the west to the river on the south. The largest shopping center is at Hampton Village across from the Target store. This area is close to both St.Louis Hills and Lindenwood Park. Both are have rather expensive homes but are very well  kept and there is a low crime rate. Other areas are Shaw/Tower grove close to TowerGrove park and the south grand area with lots of great restaurants, Past there to the south is Dutchtown and Bevo which has the historic Bevo Mill and a large Bosnian Population. A little south of that is Holly hills which contains a street with a tree lined median and large elegant homes. Other very historic areas of south city are Compton Heights, Soulard and Lafayette Square. Its a huge area with very different neighborhoods. You should really take some time and leisurely drive through some of these neighborhoods to get a feel for them  yourself. Descriptions on websites cant do some of them justice.

  2. South St. Louis is one of the most diverse areas of the City - specific neighborhoods include Shaw, Tower Grove East, Tower Grove South, Benton Park etc.  You can learn more by visiting the website below and searching based on neighborhood name.  The Grand Area which runs through several of the neighborhoods listed is a mixture of restaurants, shopping, an international grocery store, etc.  Tower Grove Park which is centrally located to much of South St. Louis is a wonderful old park full of huge trees, pavilions from the Worlds Fair, bike and running trails etc.  Hope this helps.

  3. Hi. I'm the About.com Guide to St. Louis, and actually live in South St. Louis. Two of my favorite neighborhoods (in South St. Louis) are "The Hill" and Southampton. I've written about both at:

The Southampton neighborhood in particular is really dynamic and has become quite popular.

I'd be happy to answer any questions too.

    Thanks.
