I have to weld floor pans into a 72 bug. The metal is 18 ga thickness. I have never stick welded though I have used a mig welder many times. My question is will a stick welder work for doing this kind of welding. I have access to a stick welder but would have to buy a mig welder. If a stick welder would work what rods do you need? Looks are not as much a consideration as structural integrity. Its going to be covered in carpet anyway.

  1. Stick will work. Only problem you will need to do a lot of practice first to get use to the stick.  I would say try a 6011 or 6013 rod and keep the current low, and try a small size rod.  Again Practice will be the key here.

  2. Yes a stick welder will work.If it's an ac/dc machine, try to use ac,(not quite as "digging" of an arc as dc) Also try to use a rod with a "soft arc" 6013,7014,7018. I have some 6013 1/16" yes that"s right 1/16" that works great for this situation.Try to run it at about 40-50 amps. You may have to use a lighter shade, not a lot of light generated (comparitively) by such a thin rod.
