Question:

Will storing medications in a refrigerator shorten shelf life?

I am storing a variety of medications in a dedicated refrigerator right now with a small pack of desiccant in each bottle and two zip lock bags around each bottle. I keep the fridge at a constant 38 degrees F and humidity of 32%. Most of the meds are antibiotics but there is other stuff like aspirin, some hetastarch solution, chitosan hemostatic agents, etc. Does anyone have any evidence to back the claim that refrigeration will harm most medications, or is it beneficial? I've always heard that it is a good thing, but I just thought I'd check. The reason I have them in a fridge right now is to extend the shelf life.

  1. From what I've known and read, storing your meds in the refrigerator will be more beneficial than in other inconsistent places throughout the house (kitchen, bathroom), where the temperatures and humidity levels change. Unless the med package specifically says 'do not refrigerate,' I think the refrigerator should be safe. Do note the temperature range that the package may suggest. I've included a link to the Walgreen's pharmacy Health Library that states this in more detail.

  2. there is an expiration date on evry meds, once  this date is reached, its already expired, refrigeration does not extend this indicated expiration.
