I'm a lil chunky, and thought about getting a membership at the YMCA to use there pool. I heard swimming builds muscle, tones you up, but I dont want to be a muscular chubby guy. I want like the Michael Phelps body, not a football player body.

  1. Swimming is a great exercise because it works all muscles of the body and there is no strain on your joints, swimming also creates very toned back and shoulder muscles. But I'm sure Michael Phelps works out in the gym as well not only in the swimming pool. If you work out right you won't look bulky and buff but achieve your lean results. So its all about doing it right.

  2. swimming is one of the best cardio vascular trainings out there.

by swiming ur using all the muscles in ur body i  swim 3 times a week for estimated 1 hour per time. i do it mostly for the cardio on the side of that i do weightlifting which also helps u to tone ur body and replace  the fat tissue u lost and build bigger muscle tissue if u combnie those 2 ull have a greta body in a few weeks ;)

  3. swimming builds muscle. running or jogging would be better for burning fat.

  4. yeah swimming is really good for you because there is not as much pressure on ur joints like running. i did swim team and it made me feel really good after. so swimming alot will build endurance.

  5. Losing fat makes you skinny(er).  Exercise of any kind will help.  But, at it's most basic terms, you need to burn off more calories than you take in to lose weight.

Don't worry about the muscle.  Worry more about losing fat.

  6. Swimming will not make you skinny. It shaves off body fat and tones all over when you are an average swimmer. To change your body type to look like Micheal, you have to swim approx 10 k's a day, do weight and circuit training and eat a high carb/protien diet. Have no social life, no job and train all day with early nights and even earlier mornings!

To become an average swimmer it's a combination of fast and slow laps with plenty of kickboard work. It's about not how far you go, but how much time you take doing it. If you find yourself not travelling smoothly, get a little bit of coaching. Nobody sees themselves and coaches have all inside knowlede on how to do it easier.

Other options are to look up books or web on training programmes. You could join a group that is just for keeping fit and not for competition. These groups generally have a coach too.

Other things to consider are that at first you will eat a lot more. It also takes quite a  lot of time to change your body shape - months. If you swim everyday for 2hours, it will be approx 3 months before any noticable change will take place. The upside of this is that the look lasts longer and doesn't take all that much effort to get it back!

    Cheers ;)
