right now i have Bellsouth(at&t) Fast Access DSL with download speeds of 1.5 MBps. about 8 out every 10 friends on my friends list cannot connect to me when we are alone. once either of us starts a match with other people, then I can just join his session in progress, but then he cant hear me talking. so, I am probably going to upgrade to U-verse, which is still at&t, but maybe it will fix this annoying issue. if it doesnt, then i know it is my crappy Linksys WRT54G router, with NAT open.

  1. I had these same problems

I was on Roadrunner and my friend was on bellsouth.

If I ran it through a router we had these symptoms but only with him on bellsouth...my roadrunner friends posed no problems

If I hooked it up directly to the modem everything was fine

Oh and I was also using that same router

I spent 5 days trying to fix this with no luck other than buying a 30' ethernet cable and hooking directly to the modem.

    I give up on it

after listening to linksys blame xbox blame roadrunner blame infinity ward for so long.

Hit me up if you find the solution

    Good luck

  2. i know what you mean.  But the only service offered for the two towns myne and the one all my friends live in is charter.  Certain people just can't connect to one other.  2 of my friends simply cant start a game together i don't think its you service.  It may be the router.

  3. Alright, I have Bellsouth DSL and use that same router. I had the same EXACT problem as you. In Halo 3, for example, I could join some games but I couldn't hear everyone. Also, sometimes a game browser will search for a very long time but then find no results. The problem is your your NAT. Yes, on Xbox Live it says your NAT is open, but the thing is, it isn't entirely. I had to create a static IP on my router and connect to Xbox Live using it so that I could experience a truly "open" NAT. I am currently miles away from my router and Xbox so I am not able to go into great detail. However, I can confirm that your are not the only person with this problem and it is fixable.

I wont be home till Saturday and if this question is still open I will provide detailed information on what I did to solve this. Untill then, I can only provide a confusing link on how to create a static IP.

(Note: If you have NO idea what an IP address is, let alone a Static IP, then I wouldn't recommend messing around with your router just yet.)
